THE RULES - PONTE VECCHIO CHALLENGE 2006
- FORMAT
· The Championship will be decided by Match Play, contested by 15 players representing 15 different countries, played to the ROUND ROBIN format.
· The 15 players will be drawn into FIVE groups each of THREE players who will play each of the other players in their group in the First Round.
· A match will consist of TWO players each hitting SIX balls to three floating ‘greens’ positioned at varying distances on the River Arno.
The three ‘greens’ will each have a points value as follows:
‘green 1’ (Nearest the Bridge) 2 points
‘green 2’ 4 points
‘green 3’ (Farthest from the Bridge) 7 points
To earn points, a ball MUST land on and remain on the respective ‘green’.
The player accumulating the most points from the SIX shots, shall be declared the winner.
- ROUND ONE
· The player with the MOST WINS in each GROUP goes forward to the Quarter Finals.
In addition to the FIVE group winners, three second ranked players, with the highest accumulated points, will also go forward to the Quarter Finals.
· If, at the conclusion of the FIRST ROUND, three players in a GROUP are tied with one win each, then the player who has accumulated the highest points shall go through to the Quarter Finals.
· If two or all three of the highest scoring second-place players are tied, then the tied players will play ‘sudden death’ starting at ‘green 1’ (the nearest ‘green’ to the Bridge) and continue to ‘green 2’, ‘green 3’ and, if necessary, back to ‘green 1’ and so on, until a winner is determined.
· The order of play in all matches will be determined by the toss of a coin. The player winning the toss has the right to decide to play first or second.
Thereafter, each player will hit alternately.
- DRAW
· The composition of each of the First Round groups and the order of play will be decided by a DRAW conducted by the Chairman of the Championship Committee, or his designate, prior to the start of the competition. Each of the five groups will be lead by the five players with the higher order of merit on the WGR
The FOUR Quarter Final matches will be drawn at the Gala Dinner on Saturday evening.
· The winners of the first two Quarter Final matches will contest the first Semi Final match, with the winners of the third and fourth Quarter Final matches going through to contest the second Semi Final.
· The two Semi Final winners will then meet in the Final.
· If, at the conclusion of a match, when both players have hit their allotted six balls, the players have an equal number of accumulated points, the match will be decided by ‘sudden death’ starting at ‘green 1’ and continuing to ‘green 2’ and ‘green 3’ and so on until a winner is determined.
